OUR TRIP ITINERARY
*This is the planned itinerary, but it may be subject to change due to weather, emergencies, road closures, or other unforeseen circumstances.
Here’s an idea of what you can expect to see and do day-to-day.
We’ll kick off our trip in the morning with a welcome tea and coffee in Lerwick before setting off to explore Southern Shetland.
Our first stop will be St. Ninian’s Beach, a sand tombolo and one of Scotland’s most stunning beaches, in my opinion. We’ll then visit a spot where there’s a high chance of us seeing seals before stopping for lunch (included).
In the afternoon we’ll explore Jarlshof, an impressive archaeological site that houses the remains of multiple civilisations.
We’ll then head to Sumburgh Head, renowned for its historic lighthouse and dramatic coastal scenery.
Finally, we’ll check into our cosy hotel before enjoying a delicious welcome dinner (included).
Lunch, Dinner
Today is a day of northernmosts and we’ll be heading north, catching two inter-island ferries to Unst, the UK’s northernmost inhabited island!
We’ll start our day by visiting the northernmost castle in the UK, followed by a visit to the quirky Bobby’s Bus Shelter.
After lunch (included) at the UK’s northernmost cafe, we’ll explore more of Unst, including a replica Viking longship and longhouse, Norwick Beach, known for its geological features, and we’ll take a walk* to a viewpoint to see “Out Stack”, the northernmost point of the UK.
On the return journey, we’ll make a stop at the UK’s northernmost fish and chip shop, where you’ll have the opportunity to buy your own dinner (non-seafood options are also available).
*The walk to the viewpoint is on uneven ground and takes about 20 minutes.
Breakfast, Lunch
We’ll begin our day with a walk* at Eshaness, which showcases some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery in Shetland. The striking cliffs, sea stacks, and volcanic rock formations have been shaped by the relentless Atlantic waves.
After our walk, we’ll visit a small museum housed in a former Laird’s residence for a glimpse of island life in years past, and then enjoy lunch (included).
In the afternoon, we’ll meet a local knitter who’ll share stories and traditions behind Shetland knitting, and you’ll even have the chance to try some knitting for yourself.
We’ll round off the day with dinner (included) at our hotel.
*The walk is around 2 hours on uneven ground.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
We’ll start the day with a visit to a traditional Shetland croft on the Isle of Bressay, where you’ll experience island life first-hand, seeing how people work the land, care for livestock, and keep generation-old traditions alive in this unique landscape.
Next, we’ll travel to Lerwick, Shetland’s largest town, famous for its vibrant harbour, charming waterfront streets, and rich Norse history. It’s also the perfect place for souvenir shopping! You’ll have the afternoon to explore Lerwick at your own pace before we board the late afternoon ferry from Shetland to Orkney.
You’ll have the option to dine in Lerwick before the ferry or enjoy dinner onboard. Upon arriving in Orkney around 11pm, we’ll check into a lovely traditional hotel.
Breakfast
Our first stop today will be a scenic walk* at Yesnaby, a rugged coastal area on the west coast of Orkney Mainland, renowned for its stunning rock formations, including the impressive Yesnaby Castle sea stack.
We’ll then pause for lunch (included) before exploring Skara Brae, a remarkably well-preserved Neolithic settlement and part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney UNESCO World Heritage site. This ancient site offers a rare and fascinating glimpse into prehistoric life.
We’ll then visit two more UNESCO sites: the Ring of Brodgar, one of the largest stone circles in the UK, and the towering Stones of Stenness. Both of these historical sites date back over 5,000 years!
We’ll wrap up the day with dinner (included).
*The walk is around 1 hour on uneven ground.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This might be the most exciting day of the trip!
We’ll board an inter-island ferry to the Isle of Hoy, one of the most impressive islands in the Orkney archipelago.
While much of Orkney is flat and primarily used for agriculture, Hoy offers a dramatic contrast with its rugged, mountainous terrain reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands.
We’ll journey along the island’s scenic single-track road, making stops at points of interest with plenty of opportunities for amazing photos.
Our destination is Rackwick Beach, one of my favourite places in Scotland! Here, we’ll enjoy a packed lunch near the beachside bothy and marvel at the huge cliffs and the powerful forces of nature that shaped this stunning beach.
On our return, we’ll stop at the Scapa Flow Museum to learn more about Orkney’s wartime history at Scapa Flow.
Once back on the Orkney main island, we’ll visit somewhere you can sample a regional speciality. If you prefer, you’re also welcome to explore dinner options on your own this evening.
Breakfast, Lunch
Our day begins at the Churchill Barriers, four causeways built during WWII to protect the naval anchorage at Scapa Flow.
We’ll also stop at the Italian Chapel, a beautiful place of worship crafted by Italian prisoners of war.
We’ll head back to Kirkwall, where you’ll have free time to explore Orkney’s capital and largest town, famous for its medieval St. Magnus Cathedral and historical architecture dating back to the Norse era.
Kirkwall offers a great selection of shops for souvenir hunting, and is home to the Highland Park Distillery!
In the evening, we’ll gather for a lovely farewell dinner (included).
Breakfast, Dinner
After a wonderful time exploring Shetland & Orkney, we’ll check out of our hotel and say our goodbyes.

Ruth planned an amazing trip filled with ancient history (standing stones/neolithic dwellings), jaw-dropping scenery (cliff walks) and knowledgeable local guides. The small group was comprised of adventure-loving, cheerful people who were truly a delight to get to know. Ruth is as amazing in person as she is in her videos. I expected a well-thought-out/detailed trip, and it exceeded all expectations at every turn.
Everything about this trip far exceeded my expectations! — Ruth was simply amazing. In person, she’s every bit as genuine, warm, and engaging as you see in her videos and then some. Her happy, friendly, and outgoing personality shone throughout the trip. Her knowledge of both the area and whisky was outstanding, but it was really her personality that made the experience unforgettable. I was constantly in awe of her wide smile and genuine excitement whenever we spotted wildlife or came across a particularly beautiful landscape. — Her organizational skills were equally impressive. The trip had a perfect balance of structured activities to keep us entertained and free time to relax and explore.
Ruth was very well organized! It was a wonderful adventure! The accomodations were very comfortable and the food was excellent. I had a very memorable experience!
I thoroughly enjoyed our trip. Nice people, an amazing bus driver, and our wonderful host Ruth. I felt right at home with all of them, and was touched by Ruth’s concern when I experienced some sea-sickness. Most of the ferry crossings were smooth however and very enjoyable. The sites were well chosen and we experienced everything as advertised. I would definitely do this again or recommend it to my family and friends.
We had a fabulous trip! Lots of cool places visited in Shetland and Orkney that we would likely not have seen on our own!
Ruth Aisling is supremely well prepared and organized. The trip went off with no outward hitches. The days were packed with stunningly beautiful scenery, interesting sites and sights, and a well-rounded picture of Shetland and Orkney. Ruth herself is up-beat and charming and she attracts participants who appreciate what she offers and are lovely, cooperative, and enthusiastic. A wonderful week! Worth twice the price and left me wanting more. Top drawer!
Very well planned and executed. The host/guide was involved with making sure that every detail was perfect. Everyone on this trip had high praise for our guide Ruth and I believe everyone felt that the trip more than met their expectations. It was one of the best trips my wife and I had ever taken and we would highly recommend any future trips that Ruth plans.
This tour was an absolute joy. Brilliantly hosted by Ruth, even when the plan was disrupted by bad weather. Lovely hotel, excellent company and wonderful excursions.
Very nice trip, really enjoyed. Very well organized as well as a great host and great group.
A first-rate experience! Very well planned out and managed. We didn’t have to think much about where and when we had activities – everything was very well planned and communicated. The activities themselves were well selected and enjoyable. The accommodations selected were excellent. Meals were great too. Would travel with Ruth again.
Good time. Good People. Good itinerary.
